Our Foundation: Evidence-based Management

We work with insights from evidence-based management. Our management trainings, webinars and articles are based on years of research in the social sciences, paired with practitioners’ experiences and peer inputs.

Why Evidence-based Management?

High-quality decision-making matters in personal and professional life. In some situations, making the right or wrong decision has a direct impact on your opportunities, your standing, your outlook, and your future. In the late 90s, first guidelines on how to make decisions based on the best available evidence emerged in the healthcare sector. Evidence-based approaches quickly also became popular in law enforcement, public administration and across many areas of management. At CQ Net we believe that management skills are the key to personal and professional success. However, such management skills must be taught according to the best available evidence.

What is Evidence-based Management?

Evidence-based management refers to an approach that provides guidance on how to make better decisions. Being evidence-based means focusing on practices that have been tested in real-world situations and have been shown to work in meeting pre-defined quality standards. This makes “evidence” a better foundation for decision making than just relying on untested anecdotal experience, beliefs and other less rigorously tested sources such as business books, blogs or trainings.

Benefits of Learning with Evidence-based Insights

Using an evidence-based approach to deriving knowledge and practice yields many benefits. As a user, you will improve your decision-making process. The awareness that knowledge varies in quality and that there is no ‘silver bullet’ to solve challenges will also make you a more critical consumer of the many skills trainings and pieces of literature out there. In addition, you will internalise the process of including not only one, but several sources of evidence before you make an important decision. Using an evidence-based approach will teach you about the many factors that underpin the notion of "good" management skills and raise your awareness for contextual factors, the role of various theories, how theory is best turned into practice, and how to yield adequate outcomes.

How we use Evidence-based Management at CQ Net

In devising its high-quality trainings and articles, CQ Net relies on many of the principles, tools and methodologies rooted in the Evidence Movement.

We started by publishing CQ Dossiers (in-depth articles) that summarize the state of the scientific literature on the challenges that arise in management, including challenges related to individuals and organizations. Each of these articles provide key take-aways and practices relevant to solving individual and organizational problems beyond the business realm. Our ‘Solidity Rating’ provides you an indication how strong the available body of evidence for each particular CQ Dossier is. In addition, you will find a critical appraisal paragraph assigned to each CQ Dossier that discusses limitations and weaknesses of the presented evidence.

Evidence-based Management is much more than aggregating scientific literature. This is why we also offer trainings, courses and webinars, addressing specific challenges from an Evidence-based Management point of view. Our CQ Net online trainings are based on a mixture of previously researched CQ Dossiers, the experience of our academic experts and management practitioners, and the combined insights of all training participants. The last point refers to the so-called Collaboration Quotient - the CQ - which posits that knowledge can be enriched, broadened and diversified by aggregating the ideas and talents of an entire group. By combining research, practical experience and real-world applications from peers, CQ Net online trainings provide an excellent, high-quality and evidence-based basis for learning management skills.
